• Your Data is on the Dark Web

Your data is on the dark web statistically speaking. There were 1,120 total breaches and more than 171 million records exposed in 2017. What does that mean for you? That means your personal information is the hands of bad people. Data such as:

    • Name
    • Birthdate
    • Social Security Number
    • Address
    • Phone Number
    • Bank Account Information
    • Credit Card Information
    • Usernames and Passwords
    • Web History
    • Personal Emails
    • Medical Information

That’s just to name a few that are the top of the list. When that data is in the wrong hands it can lead to identity theft and can be leveraged to access other personal online accounts.

    What Should You Do?

The first thing you should do is freeze your credit. That will prevent someone from opening credit accounts in your name. The second thing you should do is change your usernames and passwords of all websites you log into. You should use a different password for each site. You should also enable two factor authentication on all sites that support it. Two factor authentication ensures a user is granted access only after successfully presenting several separate pieces of evidence to an authentication mechanism – typically at least two of the following categories: knowledge (something they know), possession (something they have), and inherence (something they are).

I recommend using Duo or Yubikey for two factor authentication.

Duo: Duo can be implemented on several different sites and services. What Duo does is alter the way you log into an account so that you have to enter a code from a hardware token, verify by phone call, or respond to a push notification on your mobile device before you are allowed access.

Yubikey: Yubikey looks a lot like a USB drive and can easily be used on a lot of sites. Two of the most popular sites are Google and Facebook. Once Yubikey is enabled on your account, no one cal log in with just your username and password. The bad guys will also need your Yubikey to successfully log in.

    Online Stalking

I don’t just recommend this to people who are concerned about data breaches. Duo and Yubikey are especially useful for those how are getting hacked and harassed online. By using two factor authentication you will prevent the bad guys from gaining access to your personal data, documents, and correspondence. The Dark Web and online stalking are two cyber investigations we perform. Contact us for a free consultation if you would like to learn more.
